Tokyo’s neon-lit skyline quivers beneath the weight of a monstrous, raging kaiju. Structures collapse like sandcastles, and terrified locals run for their lives. A towering creature dressed in crimson and silver rises above it all to face the terrifying threat: Ultraman, Earth’s fabled protector. The official trailer for “Ultraman Rising,“ a Netflix original movie, has an exciting opening that teases an exciting mix of humor, action, and surprising family drama.
Nevertheless, Ken Sato, a bitter baseball player who has grudgingly returned to his hometown, takes on the role of Ultraman rather than a seasoned fighter. We get glimmers of his former glory, the enthusiasm of the crowd giving way to the subdued disappointment of a faltering career. This is not the hero that Sato thought he would become, but destiny has other ideas.
The teaser takes a funny turn when Sato learns that in addition to fighting monsters the size of skyscrapers, he has also taken on the reluctant role of protector to a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing bundle of cute mayhem known as a baby kaiju. The montage that ensues is pure gold, featuring a perplexed Sato attempting to balance his superhero responsibilities with the insanity of parenting a gigantic kid. Watery chaos ensues as bath time in a stadium pool is combined with furniture turned into chew toys, and bottles overflow with bright blue milk.
But beyond the comedic moments, there’s a more complex story. Sato needs to develop the ability to balance his ego and his obligations, his past grandeur and the challenges of fatherhood. His safety is as important to Tokyo’s future as it is to this inquisitive and helpless creature. The teaser teases an intriguing conflict between ambition and family as well as a malevolent organization hoping to utilize the baby kaiju’s powers.
“Ultraman: Rising” offers a novel perspective on the traditional superhero story. It adds levity to dangerous situations and serves as a reminder that bravery may arise from the most unlikely of places. This movie is a love letter to the heritage of monsters like Godzilla, but it’s also a contemporary tale about accepting our responsibilities—even the ones that involve diapers that can breathe fire—and finding strength in our vulnerabilities.
